Who We Are

Built to fight for the people insurance companies ignore.

"We started this firm because injury victims deserve attorneys who actually answer the phone — and actually go to battle for them."

The Longhorn Law Firm was built on a simple premise: the people who need a great lawyer the most are usually the ones who can least afford one. That's why we work on pure contingency — you pay us nothing unless we win. Our attorneys are licensed in New Mexico and admitted to federal court in Texas, with a Texas-licensed co-counsel partner handling state-court matters in Texas. Together, we cover the full Southwest.

We're not a settlement mill. We're not going to hand your case to a paralegal and check in once a month. When you hire The Longhorn Law Firm, you get attorneys who know your name, your story, and your case inside and out.

"More than a name — it's the mindset we bring to every case."
Our Story

The story behind the Longhorn name.

The Longhorn Law Firm is more than just a name — it represents who Shawn Barnett is, where he comes from, and the mindset he brings to every case.

Shawn graduated from The University of Texas at Austin, where he studied Political Communication along with Business and Public Policy. Growing up in Texas, the Longhorn name always represented toughness, pride, resilience, loyalty, and an unwavering competitive spirit. Those values helped shape not only his education, but the way he approaches life, leadership, and the practice of law.

A lifelong supporter of Texas Longhorn athletics, Shawn has always admired the grit, discipline, and fight associated with the university and its sports programs. Whether it was football Saturdays, the culture surrounding Austin, or the pride that comes with representing Texas at the highest level, the Longhorn identity became deeply personal to him long before he ever founded a law firm.

That same mentality carries over into the courtroom and every case Longhorn Law Firm handles. The firm was built around the idea that injury victims deserve someone willing to stand tall, fight aggressively, and never back down when powerful insurance companies or corporations try to take advantage of them.

The Longhorn name represents strength under pressure, resilience in adversity, and charging forward no matter the challenge — values that define both the University of Texas tradition and the mission of Longhorn Law Firm today.

For Shawn, Longhorn Law Firm is not just branding. It is a reflection of his Texas roots, his connection to the University of Texas at Austin, and his commitment to fighting for everyday people across Texas and New Mexico.

Why Longhorn Law

Why we're different.

The honest answer is not in the brochures. Plenty of firms can describe themselves as "aggressive" and "compassionate." Almost any firm can say "we'll fight for you."

What's harder to claim is the kind of lived experience that actually changes how a case gets handled — and it's the experience that defines this firm.

"Most personal injury lawyers have never been the victim. Shawn Barnett has been — twice."

The Longhorn Difference
01

He's been the victim. Twice.

Hit head-on by a drunk driver. In a separate crash, struck in the side by an 18-wheeler. Neither was his fault. Shawn has argued with insurance adjusters from a hospital bed — and that perspective doesn't come from a textbook. It shapes how he evaluates a client's pain, how he responds to lowball offers, and how he refuses to settle short.

02

He's lived through surgery and recovery.

A meniscus tear. Back surgery. The slow, hard, sometimes invisible work of rehabilitation. When a client describes what their recovery actually feels like — the bad days, the setbacks, the mental weight — Shawn doesn't have to imagine. He's been there.

03

He competes at the highest levels of endurance sport.

11-time marathoner. 14-time half marathoner. Three-time Hyrox competitor in Houston and Washington, DC. Endurance work isn't a hobby — it's how he approaches cases. The hard miles. The discipline of preparation. The refusal to quit before the work is done.

04

He builds community, not a client list.

Founder of Running Down a Dream, a nonprofit that uses running to mentor young people. Founder of Dreamers Run Club, one of the largest run clubs in San Antonio. He didn't move to the cities he serves to chase cases — he built things in them.

05

He covers both states.

Licensed in New Mexico and operating a New Mexico office. In Texas, he works with established co-counsel relationships across the state — including veteran trial attorney Jonathan Perez in San Antonio. Cases in either state get the same direct, personal handling.

06

He's from here.

Grew up in Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park, and San Antonio. Knows the highways. Knows the courts. Knows the communities. He's not flown in from out of state to chase a settlement and disappear. The cities he serves are the cities he's lived in his whole life.

07

You talk to the attorney.

At larger firms, your case lives mostly with a paralegal who emails you updates. At Longhorn Law, you talk to the attorney handling your case — at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end. The phone calls don't get filtered. The decisions don't get delegated.

Personal Perspective

Built through personal experience.

"He knows what it feels like to sit in doctors' offices, navigate treatment plans, and face insurance companies that often prioritize profits over people."

Before becoming an attorney, Shawn Barnett experienced firsthand what many injury victims go through after a serious accident. Having personally endured multiple car and truck-related collisions — including injuries significant enough to require surgery and long-term recovery — Shawn understands the physical, emotional, and financial toll an accident can have on every part of a person's life.

He knows what it feels like to sit in doctors' offices, navigate treatment plans, deal with pain and uncertainty, miss time from work, and face insurance companies that often prioritize profits over people. Those experiences shaped not only his perspective, but the way he practices law today.

★ The Difference ★

Unlike attorneys who only know personal injury cases from behind a desk, Shawn has personally dealt with the same insurance tactics, delays, lowball offers, and pressure strategies many clients face after an accident. He understands the frustration of feeling like just another claim number — and he knows how insurance companies attempt to minimize injuries, shift blame, and wear injured people down over time.

That experience gives Shawn a different level of empathy and determination when representing his clients. He approaches every case knowing that behind every claim is a real person whose life has been disrupted. His goal is not only to fight for maximum compensation, but to help clients regain stability, peace of mind, and confidence during one of the hardest periods of their lives.

"At Longhorn Law Firm, that perspective drives everything we do. We understand the fight because we've lived it ourselves — and insurance companies know their usual games don't work here."
— Shawn Barnett, Managing Attorney
